Teaser Tuesday-Scrapbook of Murder by Lois Winston

http://thepurplebooker.com

“Lupe called me at work this afternoon,” I told Zack. We had
escaped after dinner to his apartment. Situated above my detached
garage, it afforded us a spot out of earshot of my mother-in-law
Lucille, whose contempt for Zack grew exponentially with each
passing day. Being permanently saddled with the woman was hard
enough on a good day. Today was not a good day.
Zack finished pouring two glasses of chardonnay and handed
one to me. I wandered over to the sofa and curled up in the corner.
He followed, taking a seat next to me. The seconds ticked by. He
shifted his body to face me. I suppose he was waiting for me to say something further, but my brain had stopped sending signals to
my mouth.

About the book
Crafts and murder don’t normally go hand-in-hand, but “normal” deserted craft editor Anastasia Pollack’s world nearly a year ago. Now, tripping over dead bodies seems to be the “new normal” for this reluctant amateur sleuth.
When the daughter of a murdered neighbor asks Anastasia to create a family scrapbook from old photographs and memorabilia discovered in a battered suitcase, she agrees—not only out of friendship but also from a sense of guilt over the older woman’s death. However, as Anastasia begins sorting through the contents of the suitcase, she discovers a letter revealing a fifty-year-old secret, one that unearths a long-buried scandal and unleashes a killer. Suddenly Anastasia is back in sleuthing mode as she races to prevent a suitcase full of trouble from leading to more deaths.

Book Review-Secrets at Seaside by Addison Cole (Melissa Foster)

Blog Tour: Secrets at Seaside by Addison Cole (Excerpt & Giveaway)

About the book
Tony Black is the hottest surfer on the planet. He travels the world throughout the year and spends his summers on Cape Cod with his friends, at the Seaside cottages in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. He’s got his choice of women, but Amy Maples is the one he wants. Fourteen years ago she was his for an entire summer, until a devastating accident changed everything, and what they had seemed like it had never existed—at least for her.
Amy Maples is as consistent as the day is long. She’s spent summers on Cape Cod forever, she always does the right thing, and she’s spent years trying to reclaim the heart of Tony Black, the only man she’s ever loved. She’s back for a summer of fun with her friends at Seaside, only this year she’s been offered the opportunity of a lifetime thousands of miles away, and she’s decided to try one last time to reconnect with Tony. But having a relationship with Tony means dealing with her past—and dealing with her past may knock her to her knees.
Secrets at Seaside is the sweet edition of the steamy romance novel Seaside Secrets by Melissa Foster
And I thought
I loved this book.  The characters are fun and charming.  I was surprised how the title worked it's way into the plot.  I was expecting something totally different.

The Tony and Amy and their friends are a fun group that has stuck together as friends for a long time meeting each summer at the beach.

There are a few secrets among friends it's not one of those stories that is woven together with the secrets though.

It's just a good sweet love story!

Read an excerpt
I JUST CAN’T believe that Jamie’s the first one to get married. I mean, Jamie? He never even wanted to get married.” Amy Maples was three sheets to the wind, sitting in a bar at the Ryder Resort in Boston. That was okay, she rationalized, because it was the night before the wedding of her good friends Jessica Ayers and Jamie Reed, and she and her friends were celebrating. Besides, now that Jessica and Jamie were getting married and her other three besties had gotten engaged, Amy was the only single woman of the group. Drunk was the only way she was going to make it through the weekend.
“But that was before he met Jessica and she rocked his world.” Jenna leaned across the table in the dimly lit bar and grabbed Amy’s hand.
Amy saw Jenna’s lips curve into a smile as she shifted her eyes to Tony Black, another friend they’d known forever, sitting with his arm around Amy, as per usual. Jenna raised her brows with a smile, implying something Amy knew wasn’t true. She rolled her eyes in response. Tony always sat with his arm around her, and it didn’t mean a thing, no matter how much she wished it did.
Amy and her besties, Jenna Ward, Bella Abbascia, and Leanna Bray, had grown up spending summers together at the Seaside community in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, and to this day they continued to spend their summers there, along with Jamie and Tony. The six of them had spent eight weeks together every summer for as long as Amy could remember. Their parents had owned the Seaside cottages, which they’d passed down to them. Summers were Amy’s favorite time of year. Now that Amy’s company, Maples Logistical & Conference Consulting, was so successful, she was able to take eight weeks off while her small staff handled the workload. Amy had spent seven years building and nurturing the business, and over the last three years she had turned it into a six-figure venture with clients varying from accounting to full-on logistical consulting. She could hardly believe how her life, and her summers, had changed. Just four years ago she was working part-time during the summers at one of the local restaurants to keep a modicum of income coming in. She loved summers even more now that she didn’t have to work. Of course, her love of summers might also have something to do with being in love with the six-foot-two professional surfer and motivational speaker currently sitting beside her.
If only it were reciprocated. She tipped back her glass and took another swig of her get-over-Tony drink.
“Petey, can you please get me another drink?” Jenna batted her lashes at her fiancé, Pete Lacroux. She and Pete had gotten engaged last year. Pete was a boat craftsman and he also handled the pool maintenance at Seaside. Pete nuzzled against her neck, and Amy slid her eyes away. Maybe if Sky, Pete’s sister, were there, she’d feel a little better. Sky wasn’t currently dating anyone either, but Sky had to work, so Amy was on her own.
Bella and her fiancé, Caden Grant, were whispering nose to nose, Leanna was sitting on Kurt’s lap with her forehead touching his, and Jamie and Jessica were looking at each other like they couldn’t wait to tear each other’s clothes off. Amy stole a glance at Tony, and her heart did a little dance. Delicious and painful memories from the summer before college tried to edge into her mind. As she’d done for the past fourteen years, she pushed them down deep as Tony leaned in close.
He smelled delicious, like citrus and spice with an undertone of masculinity and sophistication. She knew he wore Dolce & Gabbana’s The One. She kept a bottle of The One beside her bed at home in Boston, and every once in a while, in the dead of winter or on the cusp of spring, when months stretched like eons before she’d see Tony again, she’d spray the cologne on her pillow so she could smell him as she drifted off to sleep. It never smelled quite as good as Tony himself. Then again, Tony could be covered in sweat after a five-mile run, or laden with sea salt after a day of surfing, and he’d still smell like heaven on legs. Since they were just friends, and it looked like there was no chance of them becoming more, she relied on her fantasies to keep her warm. When she was alone in bed at night, she held on to the image of Tony wearing only his board shorts, his broad shoulders and muscular chest glistening wet, muscles primed from the surf, and those delicious abs blazing a path to his—
Tony pressed his hand to her shoulder and pulled her against him, bringing her mind back to the present.
“Time for ice water?” he asked just above a whisper.
So much for her fantasy.

Secrets And Pies by Jenny Kales-Book Review

About the book
If you can’t stand the heat, get out of Callie’s Kitchen! Greek-American restaurateur Callie Costas faces down another killer in the small waterfront town of Crystal Bay, Wisconsin. Recipes included!
Summertime in Crystal Bay means tourist season for Calliope “Callie” Costas, owner of Callie’s Kitchen, a Greek-meets-Midwest from-scratch eatery. Business is booming but so is the stress. Callie can barely keep up with the demand for her famous summer fruit pies and savory Greek delicacies, plus she’s agreed to bake dozens of “pitas” for the annual Greek Fest.
When Callie is asked to deliver cast party treats for a Murder Mystery Night at the historic Harris House, it seems like a welcome break from her hot stove. That is, until she finds herself an unwilling player in yet another suspicious death. Worse yet, the victim is a family friend and graduate student working on a project involving Crystal Bay’s colorful past.
Before long, a motley crew of suspects makes things as juicy as the succulent berries strewn around Callie’s Kitchen. And that’s not all Callie’s got on her plate. Add family obligations, a deepening romance with a local detective and unexpected personnel problems to the mix. One thing’s for sure: Callie’s got the recipe for a long, hot summer!
SECRETS AND PIES is the third installment in the Callie’s Kitchen Mystery series.
And I thought
Get ready to cozy up with a great book.  Secrets and Pies will draw you in a keep you entertained.

Callie and her friends and "wanna be" friend will have you turning the pages all the way to the end.  And then running into the kitchen to bake a pie.  The story ends with a few delicious sounding treats at the end.

Callie has more than her share of trouble going on around as dead bodies real and pretend seem to follow her where she does.
The book begins with Callie taking pies to a Murder Mystery dinner at one of the towns famous old mansions.  Within moments
Callie finds a dead body only this one is still warm and not really dead!

But it doesn't take long for a real body to appear and a mystery to solve.  When one of Callie's daughters teachers is murder on the sight of her ex-husbands new project Callie has to jump in and find the real culprit so her ex along with his annoying wife doesn't get put in the slammer.

Book Review-Giveaway-First Crush Last Love

About the book (provided by I Read Book Tours)
Remember your first crush? How your heart raced and your cheeks flushed whenever you saw him? Jessie Baxter does, and it’s happening again. Ten years ago, despite her best efforts, Lee Archer wanted to be just friends. Now, he wants more, but Jessie's still recovering from a psycho ex-husband. Can she learn to trust again and make her first crush into her last love?

Elizabeth McKenna’s latest novel will have you remembering the angst of high school, the grief of a failed relationship, and the happiness of true love.

Book Details:

Book Title: First Crush, Last Love by Elizabeth McKenna
Category: Adult Fiction, 314 pages
Genre: Romance - Contemporary
Publisher: Elizabeth McKenna
Release date: Aug 1, 2017
Tour dates: Oct 16 to Nov 3, 2017
Content Rating: PG-13 + M (There are a few short, mild sex scenes - nothing too graphic. There is swearing by certain characters. Mature themes include drinking/alcoholism, verbal abuse with some physical pushing, AIDS (a minor character is gay), stalking, brief descriptions of child abuse by a step-parent, and suicide attempt (overdose).

And I thought
I had to think a lot about this one.  How do you say in a few sentences all the emotions you feel?   I have difficulty making a firm decision how to rate(stars) First Crush, Last Love.

There are things about the book I really loved,  There are things
I kind of liked.  And honestly a little that I really didn't like.

Let's get it out there.  What I didn't like was that the first 3/4's of the book was about the high school years.  Which wasn't necessarily negative.  The story was good.  The characters were great and reading this back story overall made a good plot.

But based on the covers synopsis  I just expected more about
Jessie's and Lee's budding love and ultimate happy ending and less about their high school years.

There are a lot of high school parties described.  Lots of drinking.
A little partner switching (as happens in high school).  Lee's relationship with his high school girlfriend is on again of again.
Although Lee is the football quarterback he is a down to earth guy. He is dependable and doesn't mess around.  Unlike Tina who on an 'off again' period goes out with Lee's best friend Dale. There
are no bedroom scenes but Lee finds out that the two have been together.

On a bit of a side note.  I couldn't help but wonder if the author

was telling her own high school romance.  The high school era just flowed together seamlessly and took up alot of the book.

As the story progressed and everyone graduates the story picks up with Lee and his new life.  He leaves town and becomes a police officer.

While Jessie stays home and ends up marrying the boy she dates at the end of high school.   Things aren't rosy for them as his domineering qualities turns full throttle  possessive and abusive.

Things do end well and Jessie manages to get divorced and move on and then things finally come together for Jessie and Lee as the are reacquainted at their high school reunion.   Jessie and Lee
end happily ever after.

There are many life issues touched on and included in this story.
Marital abuse, and stalking, homosexuality (Jessie brother is gay), under age drinking and child abuse making First Crush, Last Love not a book I would want my young teenager to read.  I question the PG 13 rating.  (But I am not a fan of the ratings system.)

I enjoyed the characters and the story. I would be interested in reading about some of the other characters.  More of Dean's story (Lee's best friend).  Jessica's best friend Sarah.  And even Tina (Lee's high school girl friend.)

The group of people that Lee met and worked with while he
lived in another city were interesting and I would love to read more about them.

Overall I enjoyed the book.

Murder Over Mochas-Book Review-Author Interview

About the book
A blast from the past gets Nashville PI and coffeehouse manager Juliet Langley in hot water in this explosive mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of Death Before Decaf.
As a newly minted private eye, Juliet Langley has sworn to leave homicide to the authorities, limiting the scope of her investigations to cheating spouses and dirty business partners . . . like her ex-fiancé, Scott O’Malley. When Scott shows up unannounced at her coffeehouse, Java Jive, Juliet’s first instinct is to punch him in the nose. Her second is to turn down his desperate plea for help with a case that’s way too dangerous for her liking. But when Scott drops dead before her eyes, Juliet isn’t going to wait around for someone else to clear her name.
It’s only a matter of time before her tumultuous past with her ex-fiancé comes out, so Juliet teams up with her ex-boyfriend, police detective Ryder Hamilton, to figure out who poisoned Scott. They soon confirm that Scott was involved in an illegal scheme that’s definitely grounds for concern.
Just as romance is finally beginning to percolate for Juliet and her best friend, Pete Bennett, she has no choice but to head back to her hometown to seek out the truth. And she’ll need help from the locals to find the real killer—otherwise her happily ever after could easily end up including an actual ball and chain.

And I thought
This is one I really wish I have jumped in from the beginning.

Murder Over Mocha's was so good!  Juliet and all the cast
are delightful and left me really wanting to get the whole
scoop about what's been going on!

Juliet has been one busy girl. There seems to be alot of background and history going on that I am just nosey enough to want to get into it!

There's x's in the form of boyfriend and fiance' and even a new sizzling romance.  But will the sizzle last when Juliet has to go back to here home town?

But when the ex-fiance's secrets seem to catch up with him and he is nixed Juliet and the ex-police detective get together to solve the crime.

It's indeed a bit of a ride 'back home' full of twists and turns and lots of characters to interview.

I enjoyed my first Mocha with Juliet and look for ward to many more visits.

I received a complimentary copy from Great Escapes Tours.

Author Interview

Welcome Caroline I am delighted to have you visit the blog!

Thank you, Sherry.  I’m happy to be here!

Have you ever visited a blog before?

Yes—and I learned we have something in common.  My reading journey also began with Trixie Belden!

I am looking forward to reading Murder Over Mochas for The Great Escapes Tour.

Thank you.  It’s one of my favorites in that it blends characters from two of my series—both Java Jive and The Lizzie Hart Mysteries.

Is this your first tour with Lori at Great Escapes?

No, we’ve done a few together.  Always a pleasure!

Since we’ve just met let’s get acquainted with some need to know questions!

Do you have any little guilty pleasures that you indulge in when you writing?

Lattes!  In order to be more knowledgeable about coffee for the Java Jive series, I bought an espresso maker and taught myself how to make real espresso drinks and pour latte art.  After a couple of years of practice, I can only make a heart, but I can do it every time, which wasn’t the case when I was first starting out.  I’ve got a whole section in my kitchen dedicated to my coffee bar.

Do you have a pet that helps your or maybe hinders your writing at times?

Three of them.  The cat hates me (it’s mutual) but insists on sleeping in the corner of my office and leaving me his hairballs when he has the chance.  When my Boxer Lucy is outside, she barks at everything that moves, so I’m constantly having to ask her to please keep it down.  Then there’s Goldie, my faithful Golden Retriever, who sits at my feet and sleeps while I write, asking for nothing but a pat on the head every so often.

Which is more intriguing as a place to write. A private island? A cabin in the woods?
The busy city? Have you ever written in any of these places?

I think I’d have fun in any of those places.  I love to travel.  I live in the woods, so I’m used to that kind of scenery.  I’m thinking I would go with a private island.  I often write at the beach during our yearly trip to Hilton Head.  There’s something about the waves and the ocean breeze that gets my creative juices flowing!

The Java Jive series sounds fun.

I think this cast of characters is my favorite of all the books I’ve written.  I love how they play off each other.

How did you come up with the idea for the series?

My agent and I were batting some ideas around, and we both thought the Nashville scene would be a great place to start.  I’ve always loved the vibe of coffeehouses, and Nashville has some great ones.  I did a lot of research (read:  vacationing) in Nashville before and during the writing of this series.  It’s still one of my favorite destinations.

Can you tell us a little about the series and Juliet?

At the start, Juliet is a jilted fiancée who loses everything and accepts a job from her BFF Pete managing the coffeehouse he inherited from his father.  As her bad luck would have it, she finds a dead body her first day on the job.  Along the way, she stumbles into one dangerous situation after the other.  Finally, she decides to embrace her destiny and become a private investigator on the side, which comes with its own set of problems.  She’s juggling a lot, and that’s in addition to trying to get over a debilitating case of stage fright so she can get back to what she loves most—performing music.

Where does the series take place?

Nashville, Tennessee—Music City, USA!

If you were to transplant Juliet what city would you send her?

For her ultimate career goals, Juliet is right where she needs to be.  However, if she makes it big as a singer, she’ll have to tour the world, so she could end up anywhere.

I’m curious does Juliet have any sidekicks that help her solve crimes?

She has her BFF Pete—but don’t call him a sidekick to his face.  She also usually ends up either working with or against her detective friend/on-again-off-again boyfriend Ryder.  And then there’s Maya, her PI boss and mentor.  She’s got a great crew of friends who always have her back.

If you were to choose one of the characters from the series to star in a new series who would you choose and why?

Ryder, definitely.  I could see him as the lead detective in a gritty police procedural.

You’ve gotten me really interested! I can’t wait to start reading!

Thanks so much for chatting today. I hope you have a Great tour!

Thank you for having me, Sherry!

“Six years, a complex about my freckles, a love for pastrami, and a fear of failure.
That’s what he gave me before slaughtering my heart and my faith in men.”
Suffering from the sting of betrayal, twenty-eight-year-old Avery Johannas quits her job and moves hundreds of miles away to Ocean City, the beach town of her dreams. With the help of her zany roommate, Jodie, Avery finds a new career, home, and freedom. Throughout her self-exploration, she makes only one rule: She won’t give her heart to a man again. She’s living for herself this time.

But then she meets Jesse.
A tattoo shop owner, the green-eyed Jesse Pearce is wild with a touch of mystery. As Jesse and Avery explore Ocean City and their friendship, they’ll have a hard time drawing a line in the sand between their hearts.
When summer nights get a little more heated than either expected, they’ll have to ask themselves: Can they let go of their notions of love, or will their hearts be permanently inked by past pain?
