Beauty in Flight by Robin Patchen-Spotlight

Beauty in Flight
About the book

Her beauty once opened doors, but the felony conviction slams them shut.

Harper Cloud used to love the gilded glamour of Las Vegas, but on the far side of prison, she sees the cracks in the veneer. These days, she keeps her head down and focuses on the elderly patients in her care. Even her new wealthy east-coast boyfriend, Derrick, can't entice her away. She's trusted men before, and look where that got her.
She tries to brush off the feeling that she's being watched. But when she's followed home one night and her pursuer gets within a hair's breadth of grabbing her, she knows it's time to get away from Las Vegas.
Maybe Derrick can be trusted. Maybe his job offer—to care for his aging grandfather in Maryland—will be the second chance she needs.
But Derrick has secrets of his own, secrets that could take him down--and take Harper with him.
Can there be a second chance for someone like her?

When you make the mistake of getting in the wrong crowd, or with the wrong man, you might not be able to escape your past life. Sometimes you get trapped in the cycle. Your past will always catch up with you, eventually. But the beauty is that God has forgiven you and your past mistakes, your past life, all is forgiven.
Harper tried to escape her past, to start again. She wanted to be a nurse, to start a new life. But, the creepy feeling that someone is watching her refuses to fade away, even when she moves across the country and starts a new life. Is someone really after her, or is it just her imagination? Is she truly in danger, or is she just being overly sensitive? As she learns more about the man who enticed her to move she begins to wonder if she’ll ever be safe anywhere or if she’ll forever be looking over her shoulder, trapped in the sins of her past...

Harper doesn’t trust anyone. Will she ever find safety?

2.0 out of 5 stars Serial Installment #1January 24, 2019

This is not a book, it’s the first installment in a serial. You can’t even call it a cliffhanger, because it had no resolutions at all.
A character often has to make some questionable decisions in order for conflict to arise and a story to take off. However, you just want to shake “Harper Cloud” (that’s a woman). She has a track record of choosing dicey boyfriends - the last one got her sent to prison, new guy Derrick is a gambler, a liar and a possible murderer. However, she is so needy that she can’t seem to kick him to the curb: “maybe he’ll change”.

The author writes suspenseful books, but this one did not set the hook. I skimmed to the last page to find out what happens, but the story is totally unresolved. Harper’s bringing her troubles to Nutfield, NH, which you will recognize if you’re a fan.

This was a great book. I picked it up not really knowing what to expect. I couldn't put it down. I loved walking with Harper in her life as she pressed on trying to leave her past behind. I liked that she learned from her past and was able to help others when she saw them in a similar situation. The relationships that Harper has with her boyfriend and her boyfriend's grandfather were great. I loved seeing how she responded to both relationships. My only problem was the cliffhanger at the end, I can't wait for the next book to come out to find out how things work out. I recommend this book to those that enjoy suspense and making a new life for yourself. I received a copy of this book. This is my honest and voluntary review.
