About the book
It’s the height of campaign season, and instead of relishing newlywed bliss with her husband Doug Hollingsworth, Capitol Hill staffer Kit Marshall is busy with a tough reelection fight for her boss, member of Congress Maeve Dixon. Before Maeve and her staff–Kit included–leave Washington, D.C. to campaign full time in North Carolina, they have one last fundraising engagement.
On the iconic rooftop of a restaurant overlooking the Capitol and the Washington monument, Kit and her best pal Meg do their best to woo wealthy lobbyists for sizable campaign donations. Everyone’s enjoying the evening soiree until a powerful K Street tycoon mysteriously tumbles off the rooftop. Even with claims the fall must be suicide, Detective Maggie Glass and Kit aren’t so easily convinced foul play isn’t at work. While balancing Doug’s mid-life career crisis, Kit must spring into action to discover who killed the notorious Van Parker before Dixon’s candidacy sputters, even if it means investigating Meg’s handsome new beau, the victim’s conniving widow, and a bicycle advocate hell-bent on settling a long-standing grudge. When threatening note is left on Kit’s car, warning her to back off the investigation, she knows she’s closing in on the true story of what happened.
Character Interview
Hello Kit! Thanks for meeting me to chat.
I’m happy to be here. What a beautiful summer night in Washington
on top of Charlie Palmer’s restaurant.
I can’t believe you got us onto the rooftop. I am sure it
was quite a feat, especially given what happened here recently.
That’s right. As you know, this was a scene of one of the most
scandalous murders in Washington, D.C. history. But since I helped solve the
crime, I’m always welcome back here. It has one of the best views of the city,
with both the United States Capitol and the Washington Monument. Don’t you
agree?
It’s like a postcard! Are Meg and Trevor going to be able meet
us? I was really hoping to meet them.
Absolutely. They’re on their way. Meg is probably fixing her
makeup downstairs and Trevor finds it difficult to leave work and enjoy
himself.
Shall we order a drink and an appetizer?
We love drinks and appetizers. I’ll have a white wine, Meg will
have a Prosecco, and Trevor prefers a scotch on the rocks. For an appetizer, we
like almost anything! We hear the calamari is simply to die for here.
The view is magnificent. The monuments are so regal.
Do you have a favorite?
Although you can’t see it from here, my favorite monument is the
Lincoln Memorial. When I have a lot of energy, I like to jog up the steps to
it.
While we wait, tell me how you ended up meeting Meg and Trevor in
the first place?
I met Meg years ago when we both worked on a Senate campaign. When
our candidate won, we went to work for him on Capitol Hill and that’s where we
met Trevor. We’ve all been friends ever since then. Well, I’m friends with Meg
and Trevor. But Trevor and Meg don’t like each other…unless it’s a classic
love-hate relationship. We’ll have to see what happens in the future between
those two.
I am sure you have some interesting stories to tell since you
guys keep stumbling into crime. What was the most surprising
thing you’ve discovered in your role as sleuth?
We learned a ton of crazy historical facts when we solved the
double murder at the Continental Club. That one took us to the Smithsonian
Natural History Museum, the National Archives, and George Washington’s Mount
Vernon! Each place had a different clue to help us catch the killer.
I heard a rumor that now that you guys are back from the campaign trail that you might
be looking into in actually becoming private investigators? I know
there is a lot of scandal in our nation’s capital.
We are back from the campaign trail, but we’re going to stick to
our day jobs as congressional staffers. Never fear! We’re sure there will be more mysteries to
solve. We like our current role in which we assist the police in solving the
crimes.
Can you give me a hint of what’s next? Maybe a new scandal to
investigate?
Well, tomorrow night, there’s a big party at the United States
Botanic Garden. It’s going to be a high profile, fancy affair and we’re all
attending. My long-lost younger brother is coming to town, too. It sounds like
a recipe for trouble. Some might even say it sounds like the potential for
“Gore in the Garden!”
And I thought
And they do just keep getting better. I think part of it is sometimes
characters make their way into your world and just won't let go.
That is what happens with the characters that Colleen Shogan
gives us in the Washington Who Dun It series.
I have read a couple books in the series and they do just keep getting better.
In the newest installment all the characters are back including
Kit her husband Doug and their dog Clarence, her best friend Meg, Trevor a friend and fellow sleuth who Meg and Kit worked with previously. And Detective Glass who surprisingly accepts Kits
meddling into police investigations.
Kit runs into a little problem with solving this one though when she
thinks Megs new boyfriend just might be involved. She has to
tread water carefully around Meg while they work together to solve the mystery.
Although each book is written as a stand alone I have an idea
that there might be a little something going on leading to a new/real
romance for Meg. We can only hope. I won't spill the beans. I will
have to wait for the next one to see if I am right!
As with most Cozy's Kit has an ability to run into crime (mostly) murder and a talent to ferret out the criminals.
Old mystery movies tend to give her a little help in solving crimes as does this one. While watching Murder On the Orient Express
everything comes together for Kit and she and her pals set the scene and catch the culprit(s).
The author gives the reader a bit of a tour of Washington. In each
installment sharing facts and places of interest other than just political places to visit.
This is a fun series and I really enjoy it. I am looking forward to the next crime Kit and crew have to solve.
