Beyond Believing by D.D. Marx-Book Review with Giveaway

Beyond Believing Book Review

Picture

About the book

When Olivia gets news of her best friend Dan’s fatal car accident, her entire life is upended. Shattered with grief and struggling to find any meaning or purpose to life, she trudges along with a gaping void in her heart. Finally, when her frustration reaches its peak, Olivia decides to trust Dan’s eternal friendship. That trust allows him to break through to her from the beyond, and Dan guides Olivia through the twists and turns of her life into something new and entirely unexpected.
When Olivia exposes a gigantic internal scandal at work, her career implodes. With no job and no one to turn to, she escapes to Palm Springs for the sympathy and care of her beloved cousin, Garrett. He isn’t quite the comfort Olivia hoped for, but on that journey, meets someone who fills the void in her heart. She’s never experienced such a deep love. It heals her soul and rekindles her spirit – and just may have been the design of her dearly departed friend all along.

And I thought
I was taken by surprise.  Beyond Believing was not what I expected.  It was much more!
This is a book filled with friendship, love, hope and much more.
As Olivia struggles through everyday life without her best friend she ends up meeting Finn who is struggling too after the death of his wife.
Beyond Believing was a surprise read for me.  It was a book that was hard to put down.  An engaging and heartfelt read kept me turning each page.

Check it out and plan a few hours to spend deep into a sweet story.

I am looking forward to reading the remainder of the series.

A Knit Before Dying-By Sadie Hartwell-Book Review

About the book (provided by Great Escapes Tours)
A new business might add some much-needed charm to downtown Dorset Falls—and draw tourists to Josie’s yarn shop. But when someone gets murdered, a close-knit community could come undone . . .
Shop owner Josie Blair is finally settling into the pace of living in Dorset Falls, Connecticut. Between running Miss Marple Knits, jumpstarting a blog, and handcrafting items with the help of her knitting pals, Josie’s too preoccupied to worry about her past in New York. And thanks to Lyndon and Harry, the owners of the brand-new antique shop next door, she has another project in her midst—repurposing a box of vintage crocheted doilies adorned with the most curious needlework . . .
But before Josie can formally welcome her neighbors, she discovers Lyndon on the floor of his shop stabbed to death by a rusty old pair of sheep shears. Police have pinned Harry as the killer, but Josie isn’t so sure. Now, she’s lacing up for another homicide investigation—and no eyelet or stitch can go unexamined, lest she herself becomes ensnared in the criminal’s deadly design . . .
INCLUDES ORIGINAL KNITTING PATTERNS!
And I thought
Rarely do I give a book 5 stars.
It wasn't difficult to decide to honor Sadie Hartwell, Josie and the fun residents of Dorsett Falls with my 5 star rating.
Here's what I liked loved about A Knit Before Dying.
  • If I was choosing the best plot of the year it would go to Sadie.
  • Best integration of title to the plot. I don't want to give anything away but this author does an amazing job of weaving or in this case Knitting the title into the plot of the story.
  • Best integration of theme of series to the plot I don't think I've read a book with a better integration of the theme.  The knitting theme is woven through out the book/plot.  The author provides patterns at the end.
The cast of characters in A Knit Before Dying are fun and endearing.

Josie gets some help from Miss Evelyn is an elderly bit of a snoop.  Always ready to jump cook a casserole or jump in and help Josie out in her sleuthing.  Or instigating a little matchmaking.

Josie's uncle Eb  is just a character who plays tricks on a neighbor all because of a years old family feud.

Then there is Lorna the cook and waitress of the local diner.  Lorna plays a huge part in the plot/story by providing food for Josie and Uncle Eb.   I don't want to 'spill the beans' so to speak but the story ends with Lorna becoming the owner of the local diner.  Will we see Lorna as a main character in a future installment?  We can only hope!  I would love to see some of Lorna's recipes included.

There is a brewing romance between Josie and her neighbor
Mitch.  I suspect that things might begin to simmer in book 3.

Although A Knit Before Dying is book 2 of the series it is written as a stand alone book.  I have not had the chance to read book 1.  I was not at all lost.

The only negative I can mention is the wait for book 3!

If your a fan of good and clean books you need to check this
book out!

Interview With Author Lesley Diehl

3578
Welcome Lesley to my little Reading Journey.  I’m excited to talk a little about  Old Bones Never Die.

Before we get too deep into the bones of the story can you tell us a little about yourself.
In my former life (before I retired to write mysteries) I was a professor of psychology and university administrator. I took an early retirement to move with my husband to New Mexico. He grew up in the West and always wanted to retire there, but somehow we eventually ended up spending half the year in Upstate New York and the other half in rural Florida. We’re both mystery writers and love writing in both locations. Since I spent much of my career in New York, the river valleys and mountains there speak to me and find their way into the setting of many of my books and stories. The same is true for rural Florida with its swamps, fields of grazing cattle and abundant wildlife. I love to cook, garden and work on the 1874 cottage we bought set on a trout stream in the Butternut Valley in Upstate. In Florida we enjoy exploring this unusual part of the state. I like being able to offer readers a setting they are unfamiliar with.

How did you choose Florida as the location of the Eve Appel series.
I chose rural Florida, off from both of its coasts because it is an environment not yet spoiled by too much development. It is a gem isolated in time, a ranching and farming area where spurs still jingle in the post office and you can rub elbows with a handsome cowboy doing a little boot scootin’ on the dance floor of a local country bar. Life here has been altered little by the developers—no condominims, but a lot of ranches, farms, fish camps and RV parks. The people are country folks who work hard and play harder. I thought it would be a great place to drop my sophisticated, Connecticut-raised protagonist and see how she fared fitting in. She seems to be doing well. She’s won the hearts of many of the locals, but also offended a few as she sticks her nose into murders.

I see that Eve is one busy girl.  How many books are in the series?
Old Bones Never Die is book 5 in the series. A Secondhand Murder was the first followed by Dead in the WaterA Sporting MurderMud Bog Murder, and now Old Bones Never Die. In each book Eve takes on a killer with the help of a motley crew of family and friends including a Grandmother, Eve’s best friend, a hunky detective, a mob boss, a handsome Miccosukee and his grandfather and assorted ranchers, and, of course, some very bad dudes.
I haven’t had the chance to read any of the previous books.  Does the reader need to read the books in order to get a grasp of the story?
A reader can read them in any order, although, because I’ve had Eve change and grow as she’s adjusted to life in the swamps, I think the reader might like to follow her growth and that of the other characters in the books.

I am always curious what the author thinks of this question.  What actress would you place in the role of Eve.
I’m not crazy about that question because I don’t see many movies. I prefer looking at Netflix, the British programs, and I don’t think there are any English actors who would do Eve or any of the other characters in the books.

What hunky actor would play Sammy?
The same goes for actors. There are few American actors who I see playing a Miccosukee and too few Native Americans available for the role especially because Sammy is so much taller than most Indians. Although he is part white, his soul is essentially Miccosukee. I think that demands someone part Indian.

I always enjoy getting to know some of the sub-characters in a book. And I choose my favorite when I write a review.

Do you have a favorite in Eve’s circle of friends and would be sleuth’s?
I like Eve’s mob boss friend, Nappi Napolitani because I let the stereotype of a crime boss lead the reader into making assumptions about him, but most of them I take on and reveal how untrue they are. Nappi is a warm, supportive, loving man, a gentleman with a lot of “connections,” yet he’s never been found guilty of a crime. It’s also doubtful that he’s ever been responsible for killing anyone. The most egregious crime we see him commit is helping Eve do some breaking and entering in the first book. Along with Eve’s grandmother, Nappi just “gets” Eve and supports her snoopy nature. He uses his reputation as a tough guy to threaten people into cooperating with him. He rarely loses his temper or gets physical with anyone. At one point in this book Eve realizes she doesn’t know much about him and she begins to wonder if he really is a mob boss.

I really enjoyed reading Old Bones Never Die can you tell us how you came up with the title?
The bones uncovered by one of Sammy’s relatives date back over thirty years. The person responsible for burying them hopes they never will be unearthed because of what they say about a crime committed then, but these old bones may be buried, but their story will never die.

Eve always does seem to get into some fixes and I am sure there is another installment coming soon.  Can you tell us if  there will be any new character’s added to the cast?
I like to keep the old characters that I’ve developed as important in Eve’s life, but I also think a story can be kept fresh if new ones are introduced. There are new ones coming in eh future, people from Eve’s past who reenter her life in unexpected ways.

Back to busy girls.  I see that Eve isn’t your only sleuth.  Do you have any intentions of
introducing Eve to any of the other ‘sassy country girls’.  Maybe working a case together?
I’m afraid that might be too much sass, but it would be interesting to see whether the sass of each gal gets in the way of the others. I suspect there might be some competition for center stage because they are all such bold characters. Hera Knightsbridge, the brewer in my microbrewing series set in Upstate New York thinks she can go it alone and doesn’t need anyone’s help until she realizes her brewery needs an injection of cash to stay in business. Her application for a loan is refused when she becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a brewing competitor. Hera becomes determined to find the killer so she can clear her name, but she might just need the help of an old lover and the present sheriff in the county. Hera sounds a little like Eve in personality, doesn’t she?
Both Dr. Laura Murphy, the professor in the Laura Murphy series and Emily Rhodes, the retired preschool teacher turned bartender in the Big Lake Murder mysteries are unlike Eve in physical make-up—she’s tall and slender and they both are short and a bit chubby—but they reflect Eve’s tenacious determination to take out the bad guys (and gals). So that a lot of estrogen fueled power surges in one room if I paired even two of them!
I did a blog once where I brought some of my women together to talk about me. It was great fun and I might try that again. Most of them thought I was quite a boring person, but they seemed to like one another.

I guess I should let you go now so you can get back to Eve and the gang!
Thank you so much for chatting.

Old Bones Never Die-Lesley A. Diehl-Book Review-Giveaway

About the book (provided by Great Escapes Book Tours)
Just before Walter Egret is killed in a hit-and-run, he phoned his half-brother Sammy to report that he’d unearthed their missing father’s pocket watch, along with a pile of human bones. The project is put on hold until it can be determined if the site is an Indian burial ground. Then the bones disappear.
Now Sammy and his brother’s three orphaned children want Eve Appel to go pro, applying her innate snoopiness to the trade of private investigator.
Eve already has her hands full with her two consignment stores. What is she going to do? Sammy and Walter are Miccosukee Indians, and Walter was employed as a backhoe operator on a construction site for a sportsmen’s resort. Was Walter’s death murder or an accident? If the bones belong to Sammy’s father, how did they get there? Delving into these mysteries, Eve is aided by her usual crew of friends and family. This adventure will not only up the stakes for Eve as an investigator, but it will also open her eyes to life possibilities she never imagined.

About the author 3578
Lesley retired from her life as a professor of psychology and reclaimed her country roots by moving to a small cottage in the Butternut River Valley in upstate New York.  In the winter she migrates to old Florida—cowboys, scrub palmetto, and open fields of grazing cattle, a place where spurs still jingle in the post office, and gators make golf a contact sport.  Back north, the shy ghost inhabiting the cottage serves as her literary muse.  When not writing, she gardens, cooks and renovates the 1874 cottage with the help of her husband, two cats and, of course, Fred the ghost, who gives artistic direction to their work.
She is the author of a number of mystery series (Microbrewing Series, Big Lake Mystery Series, Eve Appel Mystery Series and the Laura Murphy Mysteries), a standalone mystery (Angel Sleuth) and numerous short stories.

And I thought...
I loved my introduction to Eve Appel and her snooping friends.
Old Bones Never Die is book 5 in the Eve Appel series.

I found myself a few pages in wondering where I've been. How could I have missed this author and this series?

Apparently I haven't been in the swamps of Florida where you'll find Eve and her group of friends solving crimes.

Although Old Bones is book 5 I didn't feel like I needed to read any of the prior books in the series.  But I ended up wanting to.
I wanted to see how Eve's unique friendship with mobster Nappi
came about.  I mean who has a  mobster buy you an R.V.  with no strings?  And then there's her ex husband who works for Nappi but has no conviction to help out 'Evie' (there is a story there) when asked.   Even 'watching her back' literally when Eve has a dinner date with a suspect.

Old Bones begins when Walter Egret a construction worker digs up human remains on a construction site and then just a few hours later is killed in a 'hit and run' accident?
Eve takes the so called 'accident' personal as Walter is her
boyfriends brother and father to three young boys who insist upon hiring Eve to find out who caused their fathers death.
With a retainer of some 30 plus dollars Eve and her friends investigate.

The reader is taken along through the questions and twists and turns of the mystery in an entertaining and comical ride.

Coffee With A Character
I enjoyed the characters in Old Bones Never Die.  Eve has quite a collection of wanna be sleuths helping her or trying to solve crime.  One character I would love to have coffee with is her
friend mob boss Nappi who was introduced in previous books.
I sure would like to sit down for coffee or maybe some Vino and hear 'his' story.

The story is wrapped up in the end with a little cliff hanger making this reader waiting with bated breath for book 6.

I am adding the Eve Appel series to my list of must reads.

A Fine Year For Murder-Lauren Carr

About the book (provided by I Read Book Tours)
After months of marital bliss, Jessica Faraday and Murphy Thornton are still discovering and adjusting to their life together. Settled in their new home, everything appears to be perfect … except in the middle of the night when, in darkest shadows of her subconscious, a deep secret from Jessica’s past creeps to the surface to make her strike out at Murphy.

When investigative journalist Dallas Walker tells the couple about her latest case, known as the Pine Bridge Massacre, they realize Jessica may have witnessed the murder of a family living near a winery owned by distant relatives she was visiting and suppressed the memory.

Determined to uncover the truth and find justice for the murder victims, Jessica and Murphy return to the scene of the crime with Dallas Walker, a spunky bull-headed Texan. Can this family reunion bring closure for a community touched by tragedy or will this prickly get-together bring an end to the Thorny Rose couple?

And I thought...
Get ready for forget the laundry and cooking super!  Once you pick up this second book in
the Thorny Rose Series you won't be able to put it down!

I met the characters Jessica and her husband Murphy in the Mac Faraday series.  I was super excited
that they are the main characters in A Fine Year For Murder.

I've found in reading the books by Lauren Carr that I really like all the characters in each story.

I was super excited that the characters from the Mac Faraday series and the Lovers In Crime series books were coming together but I was disappointed that there was only a small snippet of Mac and Archie and David from the Mac Faraday series.  Murphy's family from the Lovers in Crime series were only briefly mentioned.  I was kind of expecting the 'whole' gang to jump in and solve the crime.

A Fine Year For Murder was a super fast paced keep you on the edge of your seat mystery.
Jessica and Murphy are caught up in several different events while investigating the cold case murder.

This was another great one filled with and twists and turns and some great characters!

I received a complimentary copy.

Coffee With A Character sometimes characters just jump of the page.  And when they do I just want to have a chat and learn more about them.  Usually I choose a character other than the
main characters.  But I just can't help but want to chat with Jessica over coffee or maybe a glass of wine.
When I met Jessica and Murphy in a one of the Mac Faraday books I couldn't help but like Love them.  And the virtual butler Nigel and Tristan Jessica's brother.  But Jessica kind of took my breath away.  Her past and her present became more clear in A Fine Year For Murder.
Her character is strong yet vulnerable.  Super sweet and super intoxicating according to Murphy.
And a girl that knows how to dress, shop and choose a car.  And a dog!
I look forward to more Thorny Rose Mystery's and sharing a glass or maybe do a little shopping with Jessica.

About the series (from the authors blog)
And so I’m thrilled to be celebrating the release of my new Windswept Bay series. These books feature the Sinclair family nine brothers and sisters who are all about to encounter love one book at a time on the shores of their beloved family owned  Windswept Bay Resort. Book 1 FROM THIS MOMENT ON and book 2 SOMEWHERE WITH YOU is releasing tomorrow, September 13. And then the connecting short story WITH THIS KISS its a good one that will lead readers into book 4,  FOREVER AND FOREALWAYS is coming in Oct. With  HOLDING OUT FOR LOVE later in the year.
Mingled in with each romantic story of each of the Sinclair siblings: Cali, Shar, Jillian, Olivia, Cam, Levi, Jake, Max and Trent. There will also be short stories of visitors falling in love at the resort too, adding to this multi-layered sweet but romantic series.
I’m loving creating this series and being able to bring in elements I myself love, other than my love of spunky Texas heroines and heart-stopping cowboys in my New Horizon Ranch series (which just this month released book 8 AUSTIN) Windswept Bay is a place to highlight my love of Florida coast, sun bronzed day, moonlit nights and all the adventure and romance of this gorgeous area. Since we, as a family, vacation in the Florida Keys every summer and I look forward to it every year this new series was a natural fit for me.
I hope you’ll pick up copy and get swept away with the romance of Windswept Bay. It’s going to be summer all year long!
And if you’re looking for a cowboy lookin’ for love grab a copy of AUSTIN-New Horizon Ranch book 8 or one of the other books in this popular fun, heartwarming romantic series.

And I thought. . . Sweet romance.  I don't get the opportunity to read such sweet stories often.  I was glad I stumbled onto this one in the Kobo store.  I read free on my phone.
I enjoyed this sweet story.
If your looking for a good clean read check out Debra Clopton.
This is the second book I have read.
I think I liked Kiss A Cowboy better. But the Windswept Bay Series promises a great read!
I enjoyed the characters.  The main characters were both easy to like.  I found myself rooting for them and their romance.
I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series and seeing more of the sisters and brothers.
I give this book 5 stars.  It is what it says it is.  A good sweet story.   A great read for this genre.

Elise's Journey-Karla Gracey-Book Review

Mail Order Bride - Elise's Journey: Sweet Clean Historical Western Mail Order Bride Inspirational Romance (Eagle Creek Brides Book 1) by [Gracey, Karla]
A fun new title and new series from Karla Gracey!

About the book...provided by the author
Welcome to the majestic mountains, and the small town of Eagle Creek where brave folk are busy making new lives and new connections. The land may be rugged, but it is beautiful and the men and women are determined to make their mark.
Elise Mitchell is no stranger to traveling huge distances to follow her heart, but this time she is making the move to take back control. Tragically widowed and with a young son to look out for, she finds herself beholden to her husband’s family and their grip is chafing. Having come from Scotland, she knows the mountains and the fresh air will be a tonic for her and her son, Bailey, but will the wilds of Montana be far enough away for her to be free of the Mitchell’s clutches?
Tom Greening loves his land, loves his cattle, and loves the single life. But, when his housekeeper decides to take matters into her own hands to find him a bride he finds himself intrigued, and even begins to think he might just be the marrying kind after all. But Tom has a secret, and it has haunted him for too long. Will it ruin everything and take from him the family he never knew he wanted?

And I thought. . .
Delightful.  What a fun story.  Every now and then I want to read a sweet story.  Elise's Journey was 'it'.

Admittedly it's kind of hard to believe.  But isn't that what a great read is all about?

After Elise's husband dies unexpectedly she is left completely at
her 'in laws' mercy.  Although she tries she finally comes to the realization that she is going to 'butt heads' with them over her son Bailey's future.

While considering her options she runs across the ads for Mail Order Brides and stumbles onto Tom's ad.

Even though Tom isn't the one that places the ad it takes almost no time for them to decide that they want to pursue a relationship.

I enjoyed the story.  The interaction between Tom and Elise and Tom's acceptance of Bailey's son is sweet and heart warming.

Tom not only romances Elise but he romances Bailey as well when he buys him a dog.

Elise's Journey was truly a sweet story that kept me interested from the very beginning.

It's nice to read a good clean book that has a happy ending.

Another thing that I think is different in this story and the others I've read by this author is her ability to provide the reader with opportunities to learn more about the time period.

The author uses words to describe things that I've never heard before but are relevant to the story.  Making this an excellent story for even younger and older readers to build their vocabulary's and learn a little about different time periods while reading a wholesome story.

I enjoyed reading Book 1 of the series and look for many more installments.

Another 5 star read for Karla Gracey and Elise's Journey

Cold -Case Christianity For Kids-Review-Spotlight

Starting with .  . . This book received  resounding applause and
Image result for thumbs up huge thumbs up!  I wish I had this book when our 16 year old grandson was younger!  Just the title gets the young reader interested!
Here's what the book is about (provided by Litfuse)...
In Cold-Case Christianity for Kids, detective J. Warner Wallace draws readers into the thrill of high-stakes investigation by showing them how to think rather than telling them what to think. In this children’s companion to the bestselling Cold-Case Christianity, detective Wallace gets kids excited about testing witnesses, examining the evidence, and investigating the case for Christianity. Includes author illustrations and links to a website where kids can download activities, fill in case notes, and earn a certificate of merit.

Here's a little peek inside . . .
There are a lot of  illustrations one on every page!   And they are great!  It reads a little like a comic book in that there are so many illustrations.

I liked the Detective Definitions in the boxes on the margins.  The definitions contained great resources. The CSI Assignments made the book interactive with activities leading the reader to additional scripture and causing him/her to think about they are reading and learning.

I did feel though that an additional journal or work book might be effective.  Although I think the
Definitions, CSI Assignments and The Detective Bag are great additions I felt the printing was too
small.  There are questions and the area where the reader is to write is way too small for a young reader to fill in the blanks.

There are down loadable questions available but I would be more interested in a printed journal or
workbook.

At the end of the book is a certificate of achievement.  I thought this was great.  My 8 year old grandson will love receiving the certificate!
 :

This was an excellent book that I recommend for everyone!
Parents, homeschooling parents, and church leaders.  Great gift item!

I received a complimentary copy from Litfuse.
