A Game Of Deceit by K. A. Davis-Book Review

About the book
A father’s disappearance never solved, a mother’s secret taken to the grave, a daughter deceived…
Kathryn Landry thinks her life is just about perfect. She is the owner of a successful interior designer business in Newport Beach, California, and she has an attentive, supportive husband. But her world comes crashing down when her husband, Neil Landry, vanishes without a trace… in a situation almost identical to the disappearance of her father twenty years before.
With her father’s disappearance still a mystery, Kathryn is skeptical that the detective assigned to her case will be able to find her husband. Determined to uncover the truth, Kathryn is plunged into a world of politics, high-priced call girls and wealth. As she begins to search for her husband, a decades-old secret her mother took to the grave threatens to destroy all she holds dear. Caught up in a web of betrayals and deceit, and not knowing who to trust, Kathryn must find a way to survive as she discovers the past has a way of repeating itself.
Does the book contain: only mild language and no graphic sex
And I thought
Honestly I was more than pleasantly surprised.  I really enjoyed this book.  I don't give 5 stars often.  A Game of Deceit deserves my 5 stars.
I really don't know what I was expecting.  I guess I kind of didn't think it would fall into the Cozy category.   The cover took me closer to a suspense/thriller.
I learned you can't judge a book by it's cover.
This was a great read.  From the beginning I was drawn in and captivated by the characters and the story.
I caught myself rooting for a new love interest for Kathryn.  Should she end up with the cop or the client?

No giveaways here.  You have to read it!

This book is described as a standalone.  And nothing about a series is mentioned.

Leads me to question if there is a 2nd book in the works.  The epilogue leads me to suspect that Kathryn, the detective, her client and new partner will appear in another book as there was a bit of a cliff hanger in the epilogue.

The story did end with all the mystery solved along with a twist that I didn't expect!

This was a good clean book.  Very mild language.  There was a bedroom scene in the very beginning.

The author included recipes at the end.

I enjoyed A Game of Deceit and I hope to see more.

Survival instinct by Janie Crouch-Book Review With Giveaway

CoverSuvivalInstinct-sm.jpg

About the book
The voices in her head have decided to kill her.
Most people joke about hearing voices in their heads. For Chloe Jeffries, they’re real. And as the creative force behind one of the most popular shows on television, she’s used the constant flood of voices in her mind to her advantage: fuel for entertainment.
But now one of the voices has decided it wants Chloe all for itself.
Ex-Special Forces soldier Shane Westman just wants to make it back to his ranch in Wyoming to begin to heal from the horrors of war. The last thing he needs, even as a favor for a good friend, is to take on bodyguard duty of a flighty television writer.  But once he does, he realizes there are threats at play he doesn’t understand. And the woman who has somehow begun to thaw his frozen heart is in desperate danger from a menace they can’t see, but is always close.

Someone determined to be the last voice Chloe ever hears.

And I thought
I was super excited when I was offered Survival instinct for review!  This is the kind of story I really like.  I just kind of like the ex military man or cop gone freelance.

Survival instinct was a little thriller/suspense and a little romance.  A great combination and a great read.
A great read!

A great fast paced keep you on the edge of your seat story line
with some twists and turns.

The characters were believable and interesting!

Shane our retired military guy is the perfect guy a little dark, a little mysterious, brave and romantic.  Even though he's not looking for a romance he ends up 'fallen'.

Chloe is an interesting character.  Sweet, trusting and trust worthy and tenacious. A little tough but also a little in need of some romance! And somewhat mysterious.

Survival instinct is book 3 in the series.  I look forward to
reading book 1 and book 2.

Book Review-No Turning Back-by Tracy Buchanan-Giveaway

A giveaway follows

And I thought
A good fast paced thriller. Full of suspense and twists and turns.

I couldn't help but side with poor Anna as she tries to hold onto normally daily life while trying to figure out 'who did it'.

I couldn't help but be 'annoyed' with the doofus police who can't seem to figure out what is/was going on!  Personally I didn't see why they kept suspecting poor Anna.  But indeed they did!

Then, her friends shun her.

Her x-husband who in my opinion was a bit of a jerk begins to accuse and starts threatening to file for full custody of their sweet 8 month old daughter.  Sighting that their baby is in danger being with her Anna.  Then hello the sweet little baby is actually kidnapped while in His mother's care at her professional day care.  Hello?  That part just got me.

Sadly because I couldn't help but see how all these events could actually happen!

The only person who seems to want to help is Jamie the older brother of the boy she accidentally kills.

But the reader along with Anna is left questioning his intentions!

All this takes the reader through a wild twisty turning ride.
That finishes with a few surprises.

I totally enjoyed reading No Turning Back!   I was intrigued from the beginning to the end.

The Priority Unit-Susan Page Davis-Book Review

This is the first time I have posted a review on Sunday

About the book (provided by Amazon)
A missing man.
A mysterious computer program –
Even the people constructing it don’t know what it will do.
On the worst night of Harvey Larson’s life, his partner is killed and his wife, Carrie, walks out on him. Ten years later, the Portland, Maine police detective has learned to cope with his grief and depression. When he and the Priority Unit investigate the disappearance of software designer Nick Dunham, he meets a young woman who will change his life. Jennifer Wainthrop was the last person to admit seeing Dunham alive.

News that Carrie has committed suicide may plunge Harvey back into despair. Harvey turns to God for help untangling his complicated life. He finds strength in his faith as he attempts to save Jennifer from the same grim fate that claimed Nick. But Jennifer must depend on her own wits and God alone when the killer gets too close

Everything threatens to fall apart when the Priority Unit learns the police chief has had a tragic accident. The mysterious, romantic, and spiritual journey continues.

And I thought...
I did some thinking about this one.  The Priority Unit is a Christian Romantic Suspense title.
The thing that had me thinking was that the main characters were not 'Believers'.  They were 'Seekers'.  I have never run across a book 'Christian' or 'Inspirational' book where the main characters were not already Believers.  Most of the stories I have read have had the characters at least one in more of a  fallin' away type of existence.
It took me awhile to decide how I really felt about the 'Seekers'.
I don't say this in a bad way at all just a questioning manner much like the characters are seeking answers with their questions about God.
The more that I've thought about this I feel like The Priority Unit
is a wonderful story and possibly one of the best approaches to introducing someone to a 'real' relationship with Christ that I've ever seen/read.
I enjoyed the characters.  I enjoyed the plot.  It was a bit slow in the beginning (the first few chapters) but once it picked up I was drawn in for a fast and furious ride.   The ride takes the reader through car bombing(s), missing persons, espionage and drug dealers.
All the plots and subplots worked together for a suspenseful
story with twists and turns and a happy ending!
I especially enjoyed going to church for the first time with
Harvey and Jennifer and seeing their eyes open as they are introduced to God.
The Priority Unit was a great book.  I am anxiously waiting to read more in the series.

Coffee With A Character...
The character that I would most like to have coffee with is
Harvey.  His character starts out lonely and sad after his divorce.  As the story unravels and he begins 'investigating' God
he begins to learn to be happy and basically return to 'real living'.
He is a 'real' good guy before God.  And then after.  We'll have to wait for Book 2.

The Character I want to meet again ...
This is a new prompt/topic for my reviews.  I enjoyed
Carrie's (Harvey's ex-wife) grandmother.  She is delightful character.  In a few short pages she captured my heart.  I am sure we will capture yours.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.
Thank you Susan Page Davis for introducing me to your world

Conspiracy of Silence-Ronie Kendig-Book Review

About the book...(provided by Bethany House Publishers)
This Is the Way the World Ends. Four years after a tragic mission decimated his team, Cole "Tox" Russell has been disavowed by the United States. And that's fine--he just wants to be left alone. But when a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed, Tox is lured back into action.

Tox and his former Special Forces team regroup to work with FBI deception expert, Kasey Cortes, and fiery archaeologist, Tzivia Khalon, to search the globe for answers--and a cure. As the mission leads from one continent to another, it becomes clear they're not just fighting a plague but battling an ancient secret society whose true goals remain hidden.

With time running out and the threat for a global pandemic rising, Tox and his team realize their sole chance might be to reach back through centuries of silence to find the only answer that can save them all.
About the Author
An Army brat, Ronie Kendig grew up in the classic military family, with her father often TDY and her mother holding down the proverbial fort. Their family moved often, which left Ronie attending six schools by the time she’d entered fourth grade. Her only respite and “friends” during this time were the characters she created.
It was no surprise when she married a military veteran—her real-life hero—in June 1990.  Married more than twenty years, Ronie and her husband  have homeschooled for the last eighteen years. Despite the craziness of life, Ronie finds balance and peace with her faith, family, and retired military working doge in Northern Virginia.
Ronie has a deep love and passion for people, especially hurting people, which is why she pursued and obtained a B.S. in Psychology from Liberty University. Ronie speaks and teaches across the country and mentors other writers.
Since launching onto the publishing scene in 2010, Ronie and her books have hit bestseller lists and garnered awards and critical acclaim.

Reviews provided by Bethany House
"This fast-moving, roller-coaster thriller, with its powerful clandestine society, ancient secret, nefarious conspiracies, search spanning the globe, and under-pressure romance is sure to please fans of romantic suspense and military ops romances."
Booklist
"Kendig's first book in her Tox Files takes readers on an explosive, action-packed global journey to stop a terrorist from releasing a deadly toxin with biblical origins. Kendig has pulled out all the stops in this highly entertaining read that has plot elements of a Tom Clancy or Dan Brown novel. This is a thrill ride with a story that barely stops to catch its breath before the action revs back up again. The hero, Tox, is riveting, the heroine is strong, the secondary cast is well developed and the romance is light but sweet. Kendig has out done herself."
RT Book Reviews Top Pick
"Kendig keeps the tensions high and the pace lightning fast, with military action scenes worthy of Vince Flynn. Especially noteworthy is watching the character development of elite modern warriors forced to confront and accept ancient history, faith, and supernatural power. Kendig fans will love this opening novel in her new series."
Publishers Weekly
"Bestselling author Kendig has written an explosive adventure, raising the level of military adventure to new heights."
Christian Market
And I thought
A fast paced roller coast ride.  I enjoyed reading Conspiracy Of Silence.  This book got my interest from page one.
The story also flips back and forth to various locations from
Nigeria to Washington, to India, to New Jersey and more and was a little confusing.
I enjoyed the characters.  All of them.  And there were a lot.  I did
have to really pay attention to keep them all straight.  This is a book that I think would have benefited from a cast of characters at the beginning.
Conspiracy Of Silence is book 1 in the series.
 There is a pre-quel novella...
Warrior’s Seal

I was intrigued enough with the character to want to read the
novella.  The novella is offered 'free' on the authors site and is available at Amazon for Kindle, Nook and CBC.  Click
here the visit the authors site for the 'free' book.

I was disappointed when I read the offer of  'free' I don't have any of the listed options available.  I wish the book was available on KOBO or Book Funnel.
In my opinion this limits readers.

Conspiracy of Silence was fast paced but for me it was a long story.  I felt like it just went on and on.  I agree with the reviews provided by Bethany House.   It is a great book.  I was just left a little 'let down' with the ending.  I had hoped for more of a romance but I realize that this is a series and there is more to the story.

The story is well written.  The characters are developed and engaging.  The research and the knowledge that the author used in including the archeology and military parts of the story is exceptional.

Anyone interested in reading a fast paced suspenseful story will enjoy this book.  I think this is a book that both men and women would enjoy.

I would like to see it as a movie!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from
Bethany House Publishers.

No Good Deed Left Undone-Ginny Fite-Book Review-Author Interview-Giveaway

No Good Deed Left Undone by Ginny Fite
A giveaway follows!
About the book (provided by IRead Book Tours)
“He had an itchy feeling, something he had seen that his memory had recorded but that he wasn’t paying attention to…”

When a man has everything, he can afford to be generous. Lawyer, philanderer, and horseman Grant Wodehouse is generous to a fault—until he’s stabbed to death with a pitchfork in his barn. The killer could be anyone—his lover’s husband, his troubled son, the homeless guy he lets sleep in his barn, his unscrupulous partner or even his wife.

Methodical Detective Sam Lagarde doesn’t miss a clue as he questions an ever-growing list of suspects, only to discover the killer has been hiding in plain sight the entire time. Always one step behind the killer, finally Lagarde’s only recourse is one he never wanted to take.

And I thought...
Another new favorite. A page turner. Can't wait for more.

Plan a couple of days of getting nothing done but reading!
No Good Deed Left Undone was a thrilling page turner from page one!

I have to admit I was a little ambivalent about this book.  I truly didn't know what to expect.  From the cover I got the idea it wasn't a present day story.  From the back cover I got no indication of the time period.

Honestly I totally missed the mention of S&M on the back cover.
Don't let that scare you off.  It's one very short and well written scene.  There is one other very brief scene during one of the murders.

The rest of the book is super face paced as the reader rides along with Sam (the main character) as he and his deputy make haste in solving the crime(s).

It was pretty apparent who dun it but the author does an excellent job of keeping the reader interested and strung along making you wonder if your prediction is correct.

Without spilling the story I was a left slightly uneasy about the subject of violence caused by addiction to prescription drugs.
It was unsettling to realize that even though this was a story that anyone's  family could be involved in tragedy caused by drugs prescribed by physicians.

I really enjoyed No Good Deed Left Undone and look forward to more from Ginny her bio and my interview follow.

This was a great read but I suggest caution if violence or graphic sex is a trigger or concerning.

Author interview . . .

Hello Ginny.  Thank you for sitting down with me and your Sam Lagarde series.
Before we get into Sam let’s break the ice with a few more personal questions.

I am a quilter and as such I have lots of quilts or pieces started.  It’s kind of a thing with quilters.  How many unpublished or un-finished books do you have?

Hi, Sherry, I’m delighted to have the opportunity to talk about Sam Lagarde and No Good Deed Left Undone.
That’s a brilliant observation. My process is exactly like a quilter’s. I work on several projects at once, although not in the same day or maybe even the same week. I am constantly taking notes about ideas related to plot or character, which may be like gathering together fabrics you want to incorporate into your quilt. I also “sketch out” or design the general architecture of a story so I know where I’m going. I can be deep into writing one novel (like sewing one piece to another), be gathering material for a second, and sketching out a third. Right now, I’ve just finished writing the third Lagarde mystery; I’m tweaking a fantasy/thriller and a twisted romance that I’ve been writing over the last two years, and I’ve started sketching another novel.

Do you have a schedule or timeline when you’re writing
I have a schedule only in the sense that I write every day, but I don’t set myself a number of pages or words to accomplish. What I want to do is write, which requires thinking and imagining. But it’s not weight training. The only goal I have is to complete the project I start, which can take longer or shorter depending on how complex the initial idea is.

When you began this journey with Sam did you plan or plot the stories in the series?  Can you give us a peek at book 3?
When Sam started telling me his story, I thought only in terms of one book. But as I finished Cromwell’s Folly, I could see that Sam had some life left in him and more to show me. When I ended No Good Deed Left Undone, I knew Beverly was coming back and I had to write that story.
In book three—Lying, Cheating & Occasionally Murder—Sam has to find the murderer of a real estate broker who is shot in the middle of the night on a dark road. Beverly immediately suspects the wife, a brilliant medical researcher working on a cure for brain cancer. But you know Sam. He just has to follow the clues, wherever they lead.

Why does the series take place with Sam at his current age?
That’s another great question. Sam is the age he is because that’s how he came to me. I saw him complete in my mind the minute he started talking. He was always in his early 60s, weathered but not wrinkled. There are benefits to his age: he knows a lot, he’s relatively comfortable in his skin, and he’s really eccentric without anyone to stop him from behaving the way he wants. But he’s still got personal issues he’s never solved, particularly about love, and that makes him interesting to me. It’s also possible that I think men his age are sexy. He’s kind of grown on me, as you can see.

Your description of Sam says he seems to like horses better than people.
Riding his horse is his outlet.   Do you have a hobby that is your outlet when you’re having writer’s block or maybe needing a break?
Yes, I paint and draw. My mind simply goes away and I’m all right brained, intensely absorbed in color and line. It’s a wonderful vacation from words and sentences.

I enjoyed reading No Good Deed Left Undone I found myself as I read the story
and as the people Sam interviewed describe Grant Wodehouse that I kind of thought
I would have liked him even though he is described as a bit of a scoundrel.
Grant is a scoundrel! But Emma loved him and it’s okay if you like him.

How would you describe Wodehouse’s true character?
Grant is someone who really doesn’t know himself. He’s completely unconscious about the harm he does to the people around him. He’s charming, smart, and totally self-absorbed. He’s successful and therefore he never questions his behavior. When women reject him, he’s initially hurt but he simply replaces them. In a way, he’s spoiled, but he’s learned certain techniques to engage people. He is stuck at the developmental stage of making himself happy. You can like him, but don’t trust him. He’ll eventually break your heart.

You draw the reader in fast in the first page.  I enjoyed how the story jumped from the present to the hours prior.  Was it difficult to write in this style?
I think my mind works this way. It’s intriguing for me to write in this style but not difficult. I want to know everything that got these characters into this mess, but everything doesn’t happen in the present moment. And of all the things that happened to them to get them to the present predicament, only some of those are critical events. Figuring out where I want to show the reader those past events while I’m moving the present-time story forward is sometimes tricky. I may move a chapter a few times before I’m happy with where the reader finds that information.

Will future stories maybe give us a younger Sam?
I never thought about that. What a great idea! Who knows, maybe now that you’ve put that idea in my mind… A prequel!

Since publishing Cromwell’s Folly has your writing style or process changed with this second book in the series?
Somewhere in the middle of writing the third Lagarde mystery I think I understood what I was doing. At the beginning of writing a novel, there’s a picture in my head, some of which I don’t see consciously. During the course of unraveling the mystery of “who done it,” I take all the pieces of this 3-dimensional puzzle apart and examine them. And then I put it all back together so that the reader and I can see the entire thing at the same time. I’m clearer now that I want the reader to be a collaborator who sometimes knows important details before Sam does.

I have one last question I’m dying to ask.   With the plot of the story taking place around a horse barn did you have to do some research or do you have experience in the Equestrian arena?

I took riding lessons in my early 40s—late in life to fall in love with horses but better than never—and everything about it stuck with me from mucking out the stalls to standing in the stirrups galloping across a field, whooping in joy and fear. I even managed to fall off a horse while trying to take a jump. That’s how I learned you’re supposed to look where you want to go. Some experiences stay with you for life.

                                                            Without Warning
About the book (provided by Baker Publishing) . . .
Intensity. Skill. Tenacity.
The bodyguards of Elite Guardians Agency have it all.

Katie Singleton, a partner with the Elite Guardians Protection Agency, stumbles upon her next assignment quite by accident. Spotting blue lights at a familiar restaurant, she stops to investigate, only to discover that owner Daniel Matthews has become the target of someone who will go to any lengths to put him out of business.

Daniel might be concerned, but he's not convinced that a bodyguard--and a female one at that--is necessary. A new attack and his niece's urgings are enough to make him reconsider. He and Katie must figure out who's behind the intimidation and threats--before a would-be killer strikes again.

Praise for Always Watching

And I thought ...
This was another page turner.  A very hard book to put down.  Full of Twists and turns. A thriller of sorts.
Ms. Eason's talent for taking a suspenseful fictional story and adding faith elements is unequaled.
While the characters question their faith do to past hard ships they are thrown together and have to run for their lives and find out just who the villain is.
Each character in this story is like able.  Even the villain(s).
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in suspenseful thrillers.
Possibly a great book to introduce someone to a new faith in God.
Although Without Warning is part of the Elite Guardians series it is a stand alone book. (I encourage the reader to read book 1 it was great too.  My review is here)
I'm adding Lynette Eason's Without Warning to my list
