I enjoyed the short mysteries.  They seemed to be just the right length for quiet evening read.   Each one is well written and a lot of them are prequels to series so the reader gets an introduction to the series.
I loved the cover and I felt that it depicted the collection well and intrigued me to turn the pages.

It's Murder My Son by Lauren Carr-Audio Version Book Tour-Review/Giveaway

IT'S MURDER, MY SON by Lauren Carr

About the book
What started out as the worst day of Mac Faraday’s life would end up being a new beginning. After a messy divorce hearing, the last person that Mac wanted to see was another lawyer. Yet, this lawyer wore the expression of a child bursting to tell his secret. This confidence would reveal Mac as heir to undreamed of fortunes, and lead him to the birthplace of America’s Queen of Mystery and an investigation that will unfold like one of her famous mystery novels.

Soon after she moves to Deep Creek Lake, Maryland, Katrina Singleton learns that life in an exclusive community is not all good. For some unknown reason, a strange man calling himself “Pay Back” begins stalking her. When Katrina is found strangled all evidence points to her terrorist, who is nowhere to be found.

Three months later, the file on her murder is still open when Mac Faraday, sole heir to his unknown birth mother’s home and fortune, moves into the estate next door. Little does he know as he drives up to Spencer Manor that he is driving into a closed gate community that is hiding more suspicious deaths than his DC workload as a homicide detective. With the help of his late mother’s journal, this retired cop puts all his detective skills to work to pick up where the local investigators have left off to follow the clues to Katrina’s executor.

And I thought
The audio version brought back memories that I enjoyed!  I
had read the original print version of It's Murder, My Son a few
years ago and I was glad to get the opportunity to revisit on the Audio tour.
It was fun sitting in my crafting space working on projects and listening to this story all over again.

It's funny hearing the story seems to bring it to life.

Going back to the beginning and being reminded about not only how Mac met Archie and Gnarly I kind of remembered that part but revisiting how Mac ended up being the heir of Robin Spencer's fortune put a few things in perspective.  And how
Robin searched him out and found him was interesting and a bit sad when you realize that he never got to meet his mom.

It was also interesting to see how Mac and David met and how their brother relationship has developed through the series in the book.

And then well these Gnarly.  What can I say about Gnarly.  He's just one special character.

If you love a good mystery.  You won't find one here.  You find a
Great mystery.
If you enjoy a bit of a chuckle.  You will more than likely find a belly rolling laugh.

And you'll find some great characters.  And lot's of mystery!

I love the Mac Faraday series and I can't wait for the next one!

I received a complimentary copy.
My review will appear on retail sites and Good Reads.

First Line Friday featuring Rescuing the Rancher by Claire McEwen

 Here's the first line
Aiden Bell grasped at his old, straw cowboy hat, but it was too late . . .

And on Page 56
Her fingers were small and delicate, reminding him that, for all
her tough attitude, she was tiny compared to him.   She was on his land, so she was his responsibility now.

About the book
She’ll help protect his ranch…

And heal his heart

Firefighter Jade Carson needs to get the local residents out of a wildfire’s path, but Aidan Bell isn’t moving. Still grieving a tragedy, the stubborn rancher plans to stay and save his animals. Jade and Aidan battle the blaze on his property, only to feel the spark of something unexpected. Secrets are shared, hope kindles…but can they leave the past’s ashes behind and let love grow?

Arsenic in the azaleas

Description

A new cozy mystery series from USA Today best-selling author Dale Mayer. Follow gardener and amateur sleuth Doreen Montgomery—and her amusing and mostly lovable cat, dog, and parrot—as they catch murderers and solve crimes in lovely Kelowna, British Columbia.

Riches to rags. … Controlling to chaos. … But murder … seriously?

After her ex-husband leaves her high and dry, former socialite Doreen Montgomery's chance at a new life comes in the form of her grandmother, Nan's, dilapidated old house in picturesque Kelowna … and the added job of caring for the animals Nan couldn’t take into assisted living with her: Thaddeus, the loquacious African gray parrot with a ripe vocabulary, and his buddy, Goliath, a monster-size cat with an equally monstrous attitude.

It’s the new start Doreen and her beloved basset hound, Mugs, desperately need. But, just as things start to look up for Doreen, Goliath the cat and Mugs the dog find a human finger in Nan’s overrun garden.

And not just a finger. Once the police start digging, the rest of the body turns up and turns out to be connected to an old unsolved crime.

With her grandmother as the prime suspect, Doreen soon finds herself stumbling over clues and getting on Corporal Mack Moreau’s last nerve, as she does her best to prove her beloved Nan innocent of murder

And I thought
A page-turner from line 1.  I could not put this one down.
Honestly I didn't read the description.  I was just drawn from the title and thought it would be a good read.
It wasn't.
It was a great read
And gets my 'Best Of The Year' award

I didn't expect Doreen to walk all 3 pets Dog, Cat and Bird through town.  I giggled.

I didn't expect such endearing characters and pets.

Doreen is likeable even though she is a bit clueless which made her that much more endearing. I just 'felt for her' in all her clueless including not knowing how to make Tea or Coffee.

But give her a murder to solve and keep her Nan out of prison and Doreen excels in knowing who to ask questions (the neighbors) and how to get clues through inter-net searches and the library.

And she gets help from hunky Corporal Nick Moreau in solving 'his' investigation.

The sparks fly between the two and I kept waiting for
'The Kiss' And still waiting BTW.

But the reader is 'set-up' for more when the epilogue leaves a cliff-hanger with bones (?) buried in Nicks moms backyard.

I can not wait  to read book 2 and the rest of this 13 book series.

If you love a great Cozy series this is one you'll want to dig into!

Release Day-Rescuing the Rancher by Claire McEwen-Review

Rescuing the Rancher: A Clean Romance (Heroes of Shelter Creek Book 4) by [Claire McEwen]

And I thought
This was my first chance to read one of Claire's books and I was so excited.
I always love a good Cowboy story and Claire McEwen did not disappoint!
Reading this one was timely with California wild fires going on right now.
I enjoyed the story/plot I thought the author did a fabulous job and must have done alot of research about wild fires, fire fighters and methods of fighting fires.
And also educating people about preparedness.

I loved the main characters.

Aiden was a smart and hard working rancher that tried to be as prepared as he could in case of a fire.  He was good friend and neighbor just an all around good guy.

I could not imagine how hard that must be and to live that way.  To have an emergency plan to take care of livestock is a huge job!
Even though Aiden was prepared as a rancher his heart
and his head and emotion were not prepared for the loss of his home.  Aiden had emotional baggage to deal with and the situation triggered the thoughts and emotions he thought he had buried.

And then comes along Jade.  The firefighter that doesn't give up.  Jade is strong willed and determined.

Without planning to Jade manages to break down Aidens defenses and finds a chance at romance.

I really enjoyed Rescuing the Rancher and I am looking forward to reading more in this series.

I received a complimentary copy.
My review will appear on retail sites, Good Reads and shared on social media.
Rescuing the Rancher will be featured in weekly blog parties and be featured at My Journey Back-the-Journey Back blog.
