K Street Killing by Colleen J. Shogan-Great Escapes Tour-Book Review

About the book
It’s the height of campaign season, and instead of relishing newlywed bliss with her husband Doug Hollingsworth, Capitol Hill staffer Kit Marshall is busy with a tough reelection fight for her boss, member of Congress Maeve Dixon. Before Maeve and her staff–Kit included–leave Washington, D.C. to campaign full time in North Carolina, they have one last fundraising engagement.
On the iconic rooftop of a restaurant overlooking the Capitol and the Washington monument, Kit and her best pal Meg do their best to woo wealthy lobbyists for sizable campaign donations. Everyone’s enjoying the evening soiree until a powerful K Street tycoon mysteriously tumbles off the rooftop. Even with claims the fall must be suicide, Detective Maggie Glass and Kit aren’t so easily convinced foul play isn’t at work. While balancing Doug’s mid-life career crisis, Kit must spring into action to discover who killed the notorious Van Parker before Dixon’s candidacy sputters, even if it means investigating Meg’s handsome new beau, the victim’s conniving widow, and a bicycle advocate hell-bent on settling a long-standing grudge. When threatening note is left on Kit’s car, warning her to back off the investigation, she knows she’s closing in on the true story of what happened.
Character Interview
Hello Kit! Thanks for meeting me to chat.

I’m happy to be here. What a beautiful summer night in Washington on top of Charlie Palmer’s restaurant.

I can’t believe you got us onto the rooftop.  I am sure it was quite a feat, especially given what happened here recently.

That’s right. As you know, this was a scene of one of the most scandalous murders in Washington, D.C. history. But since I helped solve the crime, I’m always welcome back here. It has one of the best views of the city, with both the United States Capitol and the Washington Monument. Don’t you agree?

It’s like a postcard! Are Meg and Trevor going to be able meet us?  I was really hoping to meet them.

Absolutely. They’re on their way. Meg is probably fixing her makeup downstairs and Trevor finds it difficult to leave work and enjoy himself.

Shall we order a drink and an appetizer?

We love drinks and appetizers. I’ll have a white wine, Meg will have a Prosecco, and Trevor prefers a scotch on the rocks. For an appetizer, we like almost anything! We hear the calamari is simply to die for here.

The view is magnificent.   The monuments are so regal.  Do you have a favorite?

Although you can’t see it from here, my favorite monument is the Lincoln Memorial. When I have a lot of energy, I like to jog up the steps to it.

While we wait, tell me how you ended up meeting Meg and Trevor in the first place?

I met Meg years ago when we both worked on a Senate campaign. When our candidate won, we went to work for him on Capitol Hill and that’s where we met Trevor. We’ve all been friends ever since then. Well, I’m friends with Meg and Trevor. But Trevor and Meg don’t like each other…unless it’s a classic love-hate relationship. We’ll have to see what happens in the future between those two.

I am sure you have some interesting stories to tell since you guys keep stumbling into crime.   What was the most surprising thing you’ve discovered in your role as sleuth?

We learned a ton of crazy historical facts when we solved the double murder at the Continental Club. That one took us to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, the National Archives, and George Washington’s Mount Vernon! Each place had a different clue to help us catch the killer.

I heard a rumor that now that you guys are back from the campaign trail that you might be looking into in actually becoming private investigators?  I know there is a lot of scandal in our nation’s capital.

We are back from the campaign trail, but we’re going to stick to our day jobs as congressional staffers. Never fear!  We’re sure there will be more mysteries to solve. We like our current role in which we assist the police in solving the crimes.

Can you give me a hint of what’s next? Maybe a new scandal to investigate?

Well, tomorrow night, there’s a big party at the United States Botanic Garden. It’s going to be a high profile, fancy affair and we’re all attending. My long-lost younger brother is coming to town, too. It sounds like a recipe for trouble. Some might even say it sounds like the potential for “Gore in the Garden!”

And I thought
And they do just keep getting better.  I think part of it is sometimes
characters make their way into your world and just won't let go.
That is what happens with the characters that Colleen Shogan
gives us in the Washington Who Dun It series.

I have read a couple books in the series and they do just keep getting better.

In the newest installment all the characters are back including
Kit her husband Doug and their dog Clarence, her best friend Meg, Trevor a friend and fellow sleuth who Meg and Kit worked with previously.   And Detective Glass who surprisingly accepts Kits
meddling into police investigations.

Kit runs into a little problem with solving this one though when she
thinks Megs new boyfriend just might be involved.  She has to
tread water carefully around Meg while they work together to solve the mystery.

Although each book is written as a stand alone I have an idea
that there might be a little something going on leading to a new/real
romance for Meg.  We can only hope. I won't spill the beans. I will
have to wait for the next one to see if I am right!

As with most Cozy's Kit has an ability to run into crime (mostly) murder and a talent to ferret out the criminals.

Old mystery movies tend to give her a little help in solving crimes as does this one.  While watching Murder On the Orient Express
everything comes together for Kit and she and her pals set the scene and catch the culprit(s).

The author gives the reader a bit of a tour of Washington.  In each
installment sharing facts and places of interest other than just political places to visit.
This is a fun series and I really enjoy it.  I am looking forward to the next crime Kit and crew have to solve.

Stabbed In The Baklava-by Tina Kashian-Great Escapes Tour

About the book
Lucy Berberian has taken over her family’s Mediterranean restaurant on the Jersey Shore after an unsatisfying stint at a Philadelphia law firm. It’s great to be back in her old beach town, even if she’s turning into a seasoned sleuth . . .
Catering a high-society wedding should bring in some big income for Kebab Kitchen—and raise its profile too. But it’s not exactly good publicity when the best man winds up skewered like a shish kebab. Worse yet, Lucy’s ex, Azad—who’s the restaurant’s new head chef—is the prime suspect. But she doesn’t give a fig what the cops think. He may have killer looks, but he’s no murderer. She just needs to prove his innocence, before he has to go on the lamb . . .
Recipes included!
And others are saying

Tense yet fun, this second book in the series was entertaining to read. The motives and suspects are varied, secrets are revealed and Lucy has to escape personal endangerment once again.

And I thought
Lucy and friends are back in book 2 when of all people her
ex is suspected of murder.
I was drawn in by the cover and the synopsis made me want to crack this one open!
Stabbed In The Baklava is a fun and funny cozy filled with a few twists that will keep you guessing and looking for clues.
With no shortage of potential suspects it would seem easy to clear
Lucy's ex but solving a mystery in a cozy isn't always fast or easy
giving the reader many hours of enjoyment.
This one was another great one in this series.
If you enjoy a good cozy that has a little romance thrown in.

Hard Sell by Lauren Layne-Release Day Blitz-Review

Review: Hard Sell by Lauren Layne
About the book
Hard Sell by Lauren Layne
Series: 21 Wall Street Series #2

Standalone with interconnedPublished by AmazonMontlake Romance on September 4, 2018
Genres: ContemporaryRomance
Point of View: Alternating First Person Matt/Sabrina
Pages: 252
Format: eARC
Source: NetGalley
Brilliantly hot Matt Cannon doesn't mind his "boy wonder" nickname. At twenty-eight, he may be the youngest--and richest--broker at his firm, but the constant string of women in his bed know he's all man. When Matt's boss insists he clean up his image to land a potential investor, Matt knows just the woman to pose as his girlfriend.
Sabrina Cross is Wall Street's go-to "fixer"--a chameleon of a woman who can be anything, to any man, for any reason, with just one rule: no touching. Matt and Sabrina have always been like oil and water, but their new arrangement lights a match to the animosity and leads to something altogether hotter.
And I thought
Lauren Layne got me at the cover!  Hard Sell was an easy sell!
This was a fun, witty and romantic story that kept this reader turning the pages and wanting more.
Although Hard Sell is book 2 I wasn't lost at all. But I was wishin'
I had gotten to read book 1 not necessarily before reading book 2 the characters are all so engaging you want to read more.
The group Matt (in Hard Sell) his best friends and co-workers
Ian (book 1 Hard Assets) and Kennedy make up a charming group of guys.
Then you throw in the girls Sabrina (Hard Sell), Lara (Hard Assets)
Ian's fiancee and Kate who happens to be the personal assistant to all 3 guys you have a mix of great friends; sweet romance and a little laughter thrown in.
The cander between the guys, the guys/girls and the girls is just fun.
Matt and Sabrina's story starts with them at each others throats almost litterally.  Then they are thrown together because Sabrina is
a kind of 'fixer' and Matt's rep needs some fixin' and fast.
The only problem the two have a little bit of a past that keeps them fussing and keeps them simmering too.
Which adds to the problem. The problem does end up getting bigger as the two begin to understand each other get past just the bedroom.
Yes there was that back in the day which caused Matt to become the enemy.  At least for awhile.
Charming as he is manages to get back into Sabrina's good graces.
But that's mainly because she has really liked/loved him all this time she just didn't realize it.
Hard Sell is a great romance with just enough sizzle.  The bedroom scenes would cause mama to blush so don't tell her!
I can't wait to read Ian and Lara's story and Kennedy's story in book 3.

I received a complimentary copy.
My review will appear on retail sites, Net Galley and Good Reads.

Counting on You by Laura Chapman-Lola Book Tour Blitz

Counting on You
About the book
Is love worth the risk?

Math teacher Haleigh Parde has no desire to change her single status until she receives an invitation to her high school reunion. With her ex spreading rumors she needs a date and fast. Desperate times call for desperate measures and Haleigh finds herself meeting a blind date at a neighborhood bar called Amarillo Sour . . .

After watching Haleigh crash and burn, app developer Ian Henning makes her a proposition. If she'll provide honest feedback on his new dating app, he'll guarantee her a date to knock the socks off her former classmates. Even better, he—and the other Amarillo Sour regulars—will help her navigate the rocky road of dating.

Through setups ranging from awkward to absurd, Haleigh discovers her matchmaker might just be better than the matches. And Ian wonders if she's the answer to everything he's worked for professionally. Or is she something much, much more . . .

Read an excerpt
In an effort to mask her embarrassment, she raised the glass to her lips.

“Wait.” He held out his glass to hers. “Here’s to taking chances.”

She could drink to that. She toasted his glass and sipped, appreciating the way the wine both chilled her throat and warmed her chest on the way down.

He drank his beer and set it down. “So, you know I couldn’t help overhearing your date with Patrick.”

“Yeah, we covered that.”

“And I know we only officially met a few minutes ago, but I feel like—what with the eavesdropping and all—we’ve gotten to know each other a little.”

“Or you’ve learned my most embarrassing secret. I only know you develop software and—based on how well you know the lay of the land—you apparently spend a lot of your time hanging out at a bar.”

“Which is pretty much all there is to know about me. Except that I like watching both sports and nerdy TV shows, and that I wish I could have a dog, but my apartment won’t let me.”

“You’re right,” she said. “We’re practically married. Should we spend Christmas with your family or mine?”

He snorted. “Now that we’re friends, and I know that you need a date to your reunion and you’re on a deadline, I wanted to run something by you.”

Her heart fluttered. Was this guy she just met going to help her get a date? No, that was crazy. But maybe he had some advice. She’d been sarcastic when she’d asked for it earlier, but it really couldn’t hurt.

In fact, it might be better coming from a stranger than any of her work friends. It would certainly keep Nina from spreading the details through the rumor mill.

“I’m listening. Not that I know if you have the credentials to give lectures on—”

“It’s not a lecture. And I’m not a dating expert. Well, not exactly. I’m not an expert,” he repeated and cleared his throat. “But I have done a lot of research on dating. Or at least my company has, and I’ve used it for my job.”

“I thought you build apps.”

“We do. Our new app—one that’s coming out next month—is a dating app.”

“Like Tinder?”

“Kind of, but not really.” He launched into an explanation about how the app was part game, part matchmaker. That it helped connect people who’d really get along without making the process cumbersome. So far, it sounded good.

But how did she fit into this?

“We’re actually trying to find one more person to try it out.”

Oh. He needed a guinea pig. “Why?”

“We’re close to the launch date. While our feedback has been good, it hasn’t been personal. We haven’t been able to see it from the inside.”

“Why doesn’t one of your employees try it?”

He shook his head. “That’s not objective enough. We need someone who can give us an inside look, while not influencing the outcome. Someone local. Someone who can find a good match that we can brag about to our investors. Someone with a good story.”

Someone desperate enough to give it a try with an audience. Someone like her.

She could see the logic. That didn’t mean she liked where this was going. “So, you want me to try your app and report back.”

And I thought
Counting on You was a page turner.  This was a fun and funny read.
I enjoyed the characters and the kind of crazy silly story.
Haleigh seems to be at least she feels she is 'Unlucky in Love'  having had a bad early college affair that left her 'Off men' she
hasn't dated since college.
Which wasn't altogether bad since she has been focusing on work.
But when their class reunion comes up and the rumor mill focuses in on whether she'll show up and actually have date.
Haleigh decides it's high time to get a boyfriend.  At least for the reunion.
In stumbles Ian who happens to work for a dating service and is in need to rate an App he's developed.

The two work out a deal for Ian to 'coach' Haleigh through a series
of dates and prepare her for the 'real date' to the reunion.  In return for her honesty review of the App.

As you read along it's easy to see that Haleigh and Ian will end up together in the end.  But that's what makes a good romance.
Everything is tied up in a nice little 'Happily Every After' package.
If you like a good sweet romantic comedy you'll enjoy this one.
I did.

I received a complimentary copy.

Read an excerpt
Hong Kong never sleeps. It was almost midnight, and the traffic was heavy, the neon signs flashing on and off, but Upper Lascar Row was quiet, the tables of tourist junk pulled inside the shops for the night. I walked softly in the shadows on the right side of the cobblestone street, looking for Wong Antiques among the red-lacquered shop fronts with signs in Chinese and English picked out in gold. The hairs on the back of my neck were prickling as if someone were watching me, and I jumped when a cat crossed the road. How could anybody be following me? I only got to Hong Kong three hours ago. In the dim light, I saw Wong Antiques halfway up the block on the left-hand side. The only light showing was in the back, a nightlight or an office. I had crossed the street to the shop and had rung the bell once when I heard footsteps coming up the street. I slipped back across the street and melted into the doorway of a shop. Someone turned the light on in the antique shop, and a thin man wearing a blue scholar’s robe walked to the door. Henry Wong? The footsteps I heard materialized as two large men in suits. They banged on the door, and the man backed up. They banged on the door again, and he opened it unwillingly. The men were Chinese, bulky in the way a fighter is bulky, probably showing tattoos under their white shirts.

And I thought
Hang on to your seat for the twists, turns and secrets that take you on a fast paced ride.
From antiques to murder to maybe even a little rekindled romance?
You'll have to check it out to find out.
Hong Kong Central is a great read that will keep you turning the pages and maybe laughing a little too.
